ConTemporal Schedule

I’m in for a lovely time at a brand new convention in Chapel Hill, NC this weekend. ConTemporal is delightfully steampunk and has pulled in a number of Very Important Personages as their guests, including Cherie Priest as well as Clay and Susan Griffiths.  If you’re in the area, pop over for what looks to be a seriously good time. My schedule is below in case you want to track me down/harass me/buy me a cuppa.

Friday, June 22

6:00-7:00 – Reading/Talk about upcoming works

Saturday, June 23

9:00-12:00 – Writer’s Workshop

Allen has been conducting his Plotting Workshop since 2006, at nearly every convention he attends. Starting with the question, “What is plot?” he will lead attendees through a discussion of basic plot elements, which is one way a writer can plot their novel or story. It is highly interactive. Be prepared to write. This workshop is open to anyone, no previous experience necessary. Signup at the registration desk to hold a spot. (Allen Wold, Darcy Wold, Danny Birt & myself)

1:00-2:00 – How to Make Convincing Characters

Characters are as vital to a story as its plot. What elements make up a believable character? The panelists discuss techniques that can be employed to create good characters. (Danny Birt, Clay and Susan Griffith & myself)

3:00-4:00 – Kids, Young Adults and Steampunk

Steampunk isn’t just for adults. More and more teenagers, and even smaller children, are becoming snared by their curiosity in this alternate reality. Come learn what is out there, and open your mind to more possibilities. (John Claude Bemis, Emilie Bush & myself)

4:00-5:00 – How to Handle Multiple POV Stories

Having multiple point-of-view characters gives readers another window into the story. Each character has their own voice, their own way of viewing the events. The panelists discuss ways to successfully integrate multiple points of view into a work. (Natania Barron, Cherie Priest, Clay & Susan Griffith & myself.)

6:00-7:00 – Neo-Victoriana

Steampunk is largely focused on taking the Victorian era and twisting it a bit. Why does this appeal to so many people? What did the Victorians think the future would hold? (Susan & Clay Griffith, Natania Barron & myself)

Sunday, June 24

9:00-10:00 – Writer’s Workshop Wrap-Up (Allen Wold, Darcy Wold, Danny Birt & myself)
