Cat's Paw Chapter Five Alex stirred from the couch, too keyed up to sleep, and began to explore the dinky house. He wasn’t surprised to find roach traps everywhere—a nod to the bugs he’d always thought large enough to be Louisiana’s state bird. Given that the duplex next door was empty, he could well imagine there’d be a problem. Cat's Paw Chapter Four Alex’s luck had finally turned on the main highway to St. Francisville. An older Black man in a truck picked him up. The man even let Alex use his phone. The first call on the outside was to his sister.
“Miri? It’s Alex.” “You got my message, right?” His sister sounded upset, angry, all of the above. “I got the message that you weren’t picking me up. I know you’re pissed at me, but stranding my ass—” “I had a flat tire and no spare. I didn’t have a way to get it fixed fast enough, so I couldn’t come get you.” Oh. No doubt the prison office had gotten her message and just hadn’t bothered to pass it on. One final way to screw him over. And he’d thought she had blown him off. Cat's Paw Chapter Three "Stupid, stubborn prick!” Morgan said, barreling past the speed limit. No wonder Parkin had made enemies at the DEA. That lone-warrior, “I’m smarter than anyone else” crap was what had gotten him hung out to dry. It still was. She should have expected his reaction. She’d read everything she could about Alexander Michael Parkin: his psychiatric evaluations, his medical and college records. She expected him to have changed—you didn’t do all that time in a maximum-security prison and not come out scarred. Now he was a powder keg waiting for an open flame. Cat's Paw Chapter Two As he dragged the back of his hand over his sweaty forehead, Alex judged that he was two hours into his hike, though he had no watch or phone to verify that estimate. If he was right, it should be about noon. His stomach concurred.
The heat rose off the road in unrelenting waves, baking him like a piece of overcooked meat. He slapped at another bug that had nailed him on the neck. They’d proven relentless. Just another kind of hell. Cat's Paw is the first book in the Veritas series. For those who love romantic suspense/thrillers, this one hits all the buttons. Red hot danger, white hot romance! This book was originally published in 2016 using under the Chandler Steele pseudonym. I decided to reissue the books under my name, along with new covers. I'll be posting the first five chapters so you can get a sense of the story. I truly hope you enjoy it! The book description can be found here: Amazon ^^Content Warning: This is a contemporary, adult novel with profanity and sex. There is a reference to attempted rape. Also, a pet dies offscreen during the story.^^ |
