 Who knew history could be fun?
Back in the day when I was at that University of Iowa my minor was history. I was fascinated with the Tudor period (think War of the Roses, Henry VIII and his numerous wives, as well as Queen Elizabeth I.) Court intrigue! Illicit romances! Religious turmoil! You name it, the Tudors were doing it long before Game of Thrones came along. As I watched this video I knew I had to share it with you. This is how the people in the Tudor era celebrated the Twelve Nights of Christmas, both rich and poor. It’s amusing, informative, and makes me very glad I live today and not in 1509. Not everything I write makes it into the final book. This scene was originally in VALIANT LIGHT but was cut due to pacing. I thought you might like to see Riley and her apprentices on a trapping run at Beck’s favorite bar.  Denver Beck's time as an apprentice Demon Trapper was anything but easy. This time he's deep in Atlanta's metro system facing a wily, and ravenous, Gastro-Fiend.

Of course, she never needed an excuse to visit the one coffee shop that served the best hot chocolate in Atlanta. Since they were offering half-price drinks, the place was bustling on Christmas Eve.  This short story is set after the fourth book in the Demon Trappers series. If you haven't read that one, this has spoilers GALORE. This story is the counterpoint to the initial conflict between Riley and Beck from the short story IF ONLY . . .
One of the key dynamics in the Demon Trappers series is an event between Riley and Beck that occurred two years before the first book. This is that interaction (I call it the “Riley kicked to the curb” scene) and it sets up their tumultuous relationship. This is why Riley detests him so much, and why Beck really had no other choice.
